Mythbusters test fuel mileage extenders.
Anyone else watch that show? Thought it went about like most intelligent
auto folks figured it would. For folks who missed it they tested Acetone added to the fuel, a "ultra high efficiency carb", adding magnets on the fuel line, running a diesel on waste veggie oil and running a car on Hydrogen (first from a "Hydrogen reactor" and then from a tank. No surprises except for the super carb which wasn't even close to stock mileage numbers. Acetone was shown to lose you mileage on both a carbed vehicle and a modern injected one. The high efficiency carb was a HUGE loser in that it gat well under what the old factory carb could do. Magnets did nothing (what a SHOCK huh) The Hydrogen proved that the engine could run on it just fine BUT that electrolysis is no where near an efficient way to generate it in enough volume to run a vehicle, They also discovered that it can get interesting if the engine backfire when using it.... And to no surprise the diesel ran on the filtered veggie oil with a slight reduction in mileage. No surprise since Diesel designed the first Diesel engines to run on veggie oil and other heavy oils run in them just fine. However the quote Adam made was the real item, Yes the engine runs fine on the veggie oil, and that, because it was free it seems like a great idea, BUT once it becomes commonplace the oil will no longer be FREE. -- Steve W. ----== Posted via Newsfeeds.Com - Unlimited-Unrestricted-Secure Usenet News==---- http://www.newsfeeds.com The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! 120,000+ Newsgroups ----= East and West-Coast Server Farms - Total Privacy via Encryption =---- |

Mythbusters is a fun show. They went through a scenario in one of their shows to see whether a pickup got better mileage with the tailgate up or down. They are not double blind accurate, but interesting. Popular Mechanics spent a bit of money recently to test a lot of these fuel mileage extenders. They employed reasonably rigid lab procedures. None of the gadgetry was worth a c**p. |

In former years the german government favoured alterative fuels and i.e. promised veggie oil to have no fuel tax until year 2009. Many years the veggie wasn't a real competitor to diesel, as diesel was still cheap. Now, as more and more drivers changed to veggie, a lot of fuel stations made great investments, the government "changed" their promise. It will be taxed from 2007 on. Thomas |
