What is *really* annoying is that SWMBO's older 147 2.0 ts has been sat under
18" of snow out on the road for at least 10 days, and today, since I couldn't
get the 156[1] to start I went to a clients in that - and it started -
click-brmmm - first time!

[1] Conscious effort not to type 159!

Much cheaper than an ECU

How much are a set of plugs, these days?

Sounds like a plan. Is it cranking at decent speed?

GLOW PLUGS 1.9/2.4 JTD FROM £8.45

Presumably that's each.

Yes - Like I said, I think the compression is (eventually)
generating enough heat to aid combustion.

Cheap

Personally I'd get a load test done on the battery but it's a bit 50/50

Plugs are cheap enough innit.

Yes but if you *fixed* the JTD it would/should be the same. One day in
an Indy including ordering, supply and fit of glow plugs in my case.
That's got to be done unless you're cheaper than Catman!

BTW, if you're thinking of DIY, snapping the glow plug off at the root
during removal isn't unheard of so I chose to allow my Indy to take
that risk. For about 70-80 quid for a 5 cylinder..'twas a no brainer
in my opinion.

The final bill might be more than that. New battery? New starter? I
wouldn't feel that keen on using an 'Alfa' starter motor to heat up
the engine too often. The only thing I ever experienced that I felt
might have been over-engineered on a 156 was the exhaust.

I'll second that on the exhaust - mine is over 9 years old now and somewhere
near 90,000 miles and still going. I had a new flexi-pipe part welded in the
middle 2 years ago and the outer skin on the back silencer has long gone,
but its been like that for nearly 2 years and just keeps on going!
