Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays???

When we lived in California, we had some really terrific neighbors, an extended family from India. They were Sikh, but they and their (extremely well-behaved) kids enthusiastically celebrated Christmas. They decorated their house with lights, put up a tree and all-- even once showed up at our door carolling. They were fully aware of the religious significance of the day, and they thought it was a fantastic way to celebrate the Christian God. OTOH, they were really old-school India. They considered us hopelessly eccentric (a nice word for "nuts") because we kept animals in the house (our three cats). OTOOH, their kids LOVED the shelter kittens we fostered. I say "Merry Christmas" to people out of sheer ingrained habit. If it insults someone (which AFAIK it never has), I figure that's their problem. |

Hindus, of which Sikhs are a branch, tend to be very accepting of other people's beliefs, or at least so I was told when I visited India. > > OTOH, they were really old-school India. I agree -- anyone who keeps three cats must be eccentric. > > I say "Merry Christmas" to people out of sheer ingrained habit. I have no problem with the celebration of Christmas, whether privately, publicly, or in someone's place of business, whether or not open to the general public. I have a very big problem, however, with government Christmas celebrations, particularly when it uses my tax dollars. I may not believe in Christianity, but I'm a strong believer in the Constitution. |
