Maybe he meant that the vehicle's speed was at a constant
velocity, even after blowing through so many objects. One could surmise the reason for this, but why bother? Well...... 'rate of speed' might be surmised to be equivalent to acceleration - so maybe he meant they were constantly going faster and faster ? Maybe they were trying to break the 'sound barrier' ?
