I've seen this taken to extremes, where a main road has stop signs posted (to stop traffic in both directions on the main road) at what amounts to little more than a driveway. (side street, dead end, three small houses, you have to stop THERE???) Also, installing stop signs where there should be "yield" signs. A intersection near me has a 55MPH road merging into another 55MPH road. Approaching the merge point, there is good visibility for about a half mile. So you are doing 55MPH approaching the merge, see that there is NO TRAFFIC ON THE ROAD AT ALL, come to a complete stop, see that THERE IS STILL NO TRAFFIC ON THE ROAD AT ALL, and then accelerate back to 55MPH. What a pain. But of course there is always a cop hanging out nearby. -Dave |

Encinitas, CA did that to a road that is a prime arterial because the traffic was disrupting the character of the neighborhood. Rather than widen the road, as they had agreed to and have been ordered to do by several judges, they added 8 stop signs. Now they get to listen to everyone accelerate from 0-40, then slam on their brakes at the next intersection. Hopefully those NIMBYs enjoy the extra pollution they get to breathe as a result. Dave |
