Default Frozen struts?

Is it possible for your struts to temporarily freeze up? I had this happen
just recently where the strut on the driver's side seemed to be broken or
not working very well. I would notice a very hard ride going down a main
road which was mostly smooth. It was very cold out when this happened, and
this continued the next day. Now the strut seems to be working again. Any
ideas?
