"Z"
Dad,
What does the "Z" stand for? ZR1, Z06, Z51, Z71, Z28, Z24 I think there is more... But I think the ZR1 is the only 2 letter 1 digit Z... -- ZÿRiX (¯`'..(<>..<>)..'´¯) |

Special package and performance option package code. Not always the case but most of the time, once it was a package code for the Indy Pace car Z4Z. Then there was the Z16 that was used for a half baked stripe package for a collector designation for the C5 and used for the Z15 option for the C4 Grand sport in '96. Z07 for an adjustable suspension and full blown race package. Z6A for rear mirror and back glass defogger. ZN1 for a trailer package, ZQ2 and ZX2 which were convenience group codes. It all boils down to the powers that be at GM saw that the letter and numbered packages badged on the cars/trucks sold, sort of why we now have C4, C5, and C6 instead of the old solid axle, mid year and so on as a identifier. |

If they were using the letters to honor/indicate someone , who do you suppose the 'U' packages were in reference to? Options/packages were numbered in the beginning, 2 digits, then 3, then 3 with a letter suffix, then 4, then 4 with a letter suffix, and in 1963 they went to a letter prefix and a number, A01. As you can see this was using up number/letter combinations as the number of options multiplied as GM entire fleet require option numbers. The letters used for options you could order included A, C, J, L, M, N, P, T, U, and the now famous Z06. Remember they were stamping these in sheet metal tags so any letter that could be confused with a number was omitted such as the B, S, and I, which limited the combinations. The Z with its sharp corners seldom is confused with a 5 or an S so it was used to retain as many letter number combination as possible. It is still possible that in the case of the Z06 it was applied as the roomer suggests but in the real world of manufacturing most likely not. Why was it not applied as M06 as Mitchell was behind the '63 design? |

For 1963 there was a major overhaul of the RPO codes. They used the alphabet to try and categorize them with Z being the last letter and being assigned packages for instance the first one Z01 : COMFORT AND CONVIENCE GROUP resulted in this option for windshield washers being "renamed" 1961-1964 U.S. In 1961, a factory-installed bottle, 3789848, and its bracket were introduced as part of the Comfort and Convenience group, RPO 120. The RPO was changed to Z01 in 1963. This label was black and white and very similar to 988299. So, I suspect that "Zora" starting with "Z" is mere coincidence. |

Z is the package RPO codes.
L is the engine RPO codes. M is the transmission RPO codes. C for heating, cooling, and ventilation; N for steering; P for tires and wheels, U for instrumentation (radios usually). And so on. Z11 was the NASCAR full size Chevy. http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/z9077/default.aspx Z16 was the big block option package in the Chevelle in 1965. Z28 was the Special performance (Trans Am) package 1967 Camaro, which followed the Z21 Style package, the Z22 Rally Sport package, Z23 Special Interior, and Z87 Custom Interior. ZL1 was the aluminum engine package Corvette in 1969, although it was not much of a package really. It was closer to simply engine option, but what it did was install the aluminum block "package" on the L88 engine OPTION. In 1970, then there was the ZR1 option and in '71 the ZR2 option was added. The ZR1 was a race package with the LT1 engine and the ZR2 was the same package with the LS6, although planned for '71 with the LS7. The Z packages were a package because they included a number of options. Frequently the package also REQUIRED options to be ordered. The very well known Z28 included the 302 engine, special suspension, special mufflers on dual exhaust, special wheels (15x6 Rally), heavy duty radiator, and more. It also required special four speed, power disc brakes, and more. Z package codes were much more common in other Chevy lines than Corvette in the early years, so the few Z packages on Corvettes were assumed to be something really special in the meaning of the name, but in reality, they were just numbers - ones that were available or already in use for the same item in another line The "Z means Zora" and the "ZR means Zora's Racers" are myths.
