They left out the biggest gas saver of all. Drive slower.

Given the article was mainly talking about commuters, that's not really an
option since rush-hour commuters spend most of their time sitting still.
Non-hybrid cars are not very fuel efficient at the 10-20mph average speed of
urban highways during peak congestion, and going even slower would make
things worse. "Drive faster" is obviously not a useful answer either, as
people would if they could.

The only real answers are "drive less" or "drive at different times".
Transit helps with the former.

Sitting with your vehicle idling at traffic signals SAVES gas? How so,
retard?

Cars are optimized to travel at certain speeds, usually somewhere in the
50-70mph range. Faster or slower is wasteful.

By drive slower, i'm including things like coasting up to stop lights
and signs and also slow acceleration. Tactics like that work best
during city driving.

As for congestion on urban highways, that's only a couple hours a day.
All other times there's plenty of room so what's wrong with slow speeds
then.? This urban congestion story is another scam - roads simply
aren't that crowded. And what congestion there is results from
crashes and road crews. THINK

Slow acceleration uses more fuel.

No i have not and perhaps it is awful out there. But i've lived in or
been through many large cities in the eastern 2/3 of the country and
outside of rush hour, urban highways are not that crowded. It's
another big lie the govt tells us so we'll pay those taxes. That's what
they always say - We gotta raise taxes to maintain the infrastructure.

Of course. Then again, as hybrids become more common, such tactics will
become irrelevant since sudden stops will power the hard acceleration and
only actual movement will consume gas.

Or New York. Or Chicago. Or Houston. Or Dallas. Or just about any other
major city in the US.

It's so bad here the traffic reports on my favorite radio station refer to
the freeways as "the Stemmons parking lot", "the LBJ parking lot", "the Tom
Landry parking lot", etc. And that's on days when there're no wrecks.

Is that just an assumption, or is there already a clear trend
indicating that this will in fact happen?
