We need the "one sim to bind them all". GPL used to unify the group...
whether folk loved it or hated it :-) Now there's nothing to bring
everyone together, so we thrash around debating similar sims which don't
really excite us like they should, and dissimilar politics, which excites
us far too much.

Old folk are all the same, always looking for something to moan about.
Next thing you know someone will start a thread moaning about the state of
RAS ;-)

Maybe the shine's simply off sims in general. A physically realistic sim
was a brand new concept when I started posting in '93 on this newsgroup
(here from day 1, so to speak) and there was a certain "wow" factor related
to finally being able to pilot the same *insert favourite racing genre* car
on a somewhat realistic rendering of *insert favourite track here*. The
incremental improvements in sims over the decade are great, and it is
astonishing to compare the newest offerings to ICR1 or World Circuit, but I
still think nothing will quite touch the original discovery of the sim genre
in terms of a catalyst effect for lively discussion. The only other
significant improvement, and this is why it will always be a hot topic, was
the arrival of GPL. It brought the first proper physics engine based on the
danymics of discrete rigid bodies, and represented a departure from more
simple lookup tables. Everything else since then represents an improvement
on the same basic concept. Until proper real-time CFD arrives in a sim, it
will probably be pretty quiet for the gearheads in here (Mech. Eng. myself).

While all that other info might be pretty cool, I don't think it would
have any bearing on a driver's skill for safe racing. That's what we
all want, right? A fun competition against others of our relative
skill level. If a driver doesn't have any wins or poles, some people
wouldn't count him as a good racer, even if his LPI is through the
roof...

Eldred,

To win, you have to finish You don't finish by knocking cars out of your
way most of the time. You inevitably become your own victim.

As for the second part of your statement, everyone can't win. There's only
one first place.

That's where the top 5's and 10's come in.

In general, wins don't win championships (unless it's a walk-away).
Consistent Top 5's and 10's do.
