It appears to be a rod bearing and my service facility seems to think that
when the first one goes the others are not far behind. (note: this vette was
stored for 10 yrs without any attention until I bought it this year)

Good advice, especially if you plan to drive it like a Corvette. So for
$250 for rods, and around $2000 for other necessary stuff and labor, you
will chuck it and buy a $4000 crate motor?

That certainly doesn't sound like a engine that needs to be relegated to
anchor status. Bearings come and bearings go - that's just the nature of
the beast. Typical rebuild ought to solve your problems much more
inexpensively than an aftermarket - plus it'll be the original...
assuming that it is.
