Perkins Conversion
My dad is looking to do a Perkins 354 swap into a pickup. He already
has the perkins. He was thinking of putting this into 3/4 or 1 ton pickup(preferably GM). He would like to use an auto if possible. 4WD is not a neccessity, but might be a nice thing. Do you guys know where to find the trans adapter to do this? Which tranny works best(4L60E, 700R4, etc)? If done with a manual trans, what should be used for a clutch/pressure plate/etc? We are both quite mechanical, and have machining capabilities so custom is not an issue, but looking for some guidance from those who may have been down this road. Thanks Jeridiah |

Jees's does a Massey Perkins 354 turn fast enough to run in a pickup where
you don't have enough gears to keep the RPMS below @2200, If you want to go automatic, you need a Diesel auto tranny- not a just good old Turbo400. Since the flywheel bolt pattern is unusual- best keep it, the clutch and fabricate a bellhousing adapter. you may have to make up a clutchplate with the right diameter and splines, you might also have to mod the pilot bearing-input shaft assy. I know with an inframe or two the Perkins will often long outlast the rest of the Massey, but an engine that's GREAT for one application is sometimes a total failure in another, Perkins generally like to run high and bog down at torque, the casual lugging may be a killer for the old girl. Tack her to an irrigation pump and she'll probably go for 20 years. -- "A level" Red Seal (and Green Seal) ductapeologist, Cumma oncemore roundwithit-aye laddy. ve7ifd at rac dot ca "Jeridiah" > wrote in message om... > My dad is looking to do a Perkins 354 swap into a pickup. The guy who has it now bought it from someone else, so all information he provides is somewhat "secondhand". It's been done before w/ relative success, but unsure as to what it really involves to get there. JW |
