Why???

Do you need to carry the golf clubs in the Miata every day? Take the clubs
out and you'll have plenty of room for carrying other items.

If you >must< keep carrying the clubs, there are trunk luggage racks
available. You could then put any storage box on the rack with proper
tiedowns.
