Slower traffic: keep one lane left of the right lane
I state that slower traffic should keep one lane to the left of the right
lane on any road with three or more lanes in one direction. The reasons are because the rightmost lane often becomes exit only or there is a lane reduction closing the right lane anyway. Then slower traffic has to merge into faster traffic anyway. Discuss. |

Slower traffic keep to the rightmost lane... ....but move left if traffic is merging that is slower than you... ....because you're then no longer slower traffic. :-) |

People can't merge so create social rules suspending keep right except to pass thus making more problems. Teach people how to merge properly and keep right except to pass as is done in civilized driving countries. |

Through traffic should be leaving that much of a gap so that a merge can occur safely. Of course, they don't. |

Of course, they don't. Then merge into the smaller gap. If I'm in the right lane in a long line of traffic passing an interchange, I always open up a gap in front of me so that it's possible for one car to come in front of me. Going off topic, I was really beginning to think this newsgroup had been abandoned to spammers, etc. I haven't seen an on topic post here in months (and haven't posted here myself since sometime in early June of this year). |

Of course, they don't. Finding a gap is usually not an issue. The problem is people don't accelerate early enough. Thus they are going slower than traffic they are to merge into. That is the root cause of the problem. At too slow of a speed it requires a huge gap not to force traffic on the road to brake. One should be going slightly faster than the traffic being merged into. Brakes are more powerful than the engine for most cars and thus braking can be used for fine adjustment to time a gap properly while acceleration won't be there to do it for most people. |

Exactly why I say one lane to the left of the rightmost lane. |

Exactly why I say one lane to the left of the > rightmost lane. One hat size doesn't fit all. Your suggestion is workable in areas that have heavy traffic AND numerous exit/exits. Once out of urban areas there is no need, and in fact results in a decrease of carrying capacity as the right lane would be mostly empty. Spokane, WA is a particulary bad example of poor planning. I90 through it was built on abandoned RR right-of-way mostly on viaducts resulting in steep, short entries, dense heavy traffic and only three lanes. To get through the city center, one lane left is the only feasible method. Harry K |

Exactly why I say one lane to the left of the > rightmost lane. It does not conflict at all. The slightly faster speed is only for the purpose of timing a gap to enter the roadway, it is not the final speed. Why reduce road capacity to serve those who refuse to merge properly? The reason traffic is so bad is because the road capacity we have is squandered for the benefit of lazy and sloppy drivers. |

Then slower traffic has >to merge into faster traffic anyway. > >Discuss. This is the "correct", although maybe not strictly legal to drive these roads. Keeping totally to the right, this stuff happens: 1) Everyone else that merges into traffic when entering such a roadway does so at 45 mph. You either have to brake, or move left anyway. 2) If you want to move left, there is always some moron that has caught up to you and slowed down so as to occupy your blind spot forever. Eventually you are going to miss one of them and then not "miss" them, and you are all going to end up into a frappin' light pole... The right lane is for merging onto and exiting from a 3-or-more lanes wide expressway, no matter what the (antiquated) laws say. Driving is about survival, not obeying laws. |
