Info wanted, importing vintage car into Canada
Hi JT, I guess if there's no requirement for a vehicle Title, then there shouldn't be any other issues other than paying GST. I'm no legal-bagle either, so your mileage may vary. I delved into the requirements just enough to get myself back with the least amount of hassles including sitting thru the painful "press 1 for this, press 7 for that" answering machine at a call-centre. Afterwards I went thru it all again and recorded the audio so I'd have a copy of the information. Then it was a quick call to the Canuck Registrar's office to make sure there were no restrictions from the Canadian side, and that was it. I really couldn't believe how easy this was. I generally have a black cloud hovering over my head and expect the worst to happen at any time. It wasn't completely hassle free, but I got thru dealing with both border agencies pretty fast considering what could happen. One thing I did forget to mention previously was that GST is paid at the Canadian border crossing on the way back, but there will also be provincial tax that will have to be paid upon getting the vehicle licensed in all but Alberta I think. As far as our insurance issuer, SGI, was concerned, the vehicle obviously had to be inspected, but they said all the vehicle needs technically is that there must be atleast one brakelight, operated by the brake pedal, and visible at a distance of 60m. My dealings with these folks was also fairly easy compared to what I thought the hoops would be. I noticed after sending my original reply, that I was answering a posting from 2003, so I guess all my typing was for naught.
