Default clear coat application problem

Hi All,

I'm having a problem applying clear coat to a 65 Mustang that I am
rebuilding and am hoping that someone can help me figure out what is
wrong. I'm using an HLVP Finex gun with a 1.4 mm tip with a pressure of
~40psi at the gun. Based on assistance from a member of this group to
an earlier question, the colour coat is going on very well using a gun
distance of between 8" and 10" and a fan size of approximately 11".

I'm using the same gun settings / distances to apply a 4:1:1 clear coat
mix made up of DCU2042, DCX61 hardener and DT885 reducer. The problem
I am having is that the clear coat finish is very dull looking and has
a 'rough' feel when you rub your hand along it.

Any help / suggestions that anyone can give will be greatly
appreciated.

Sounds to me like the pressure is too high.

Dryspray problem. I'm not sure what preasure we use at work but I think
it's closer to 30-35 psi at the gun. Could also be you're spraying at too
fast a pace. Medium wet coats like the base and 2-3.5 feet per second spray
speed same height as the base spray. Good thing that all you need to do to
fix the clear is wet-sand the surface to take out the worst of it and
re-coat. That's about all I can offer now as I'm on holidays away from the
hell I call work and can't ask any of the clear coat applicators. Hope it
helps

Hi D.J.

Thanks for taking time out from your holiday to make comments /
suggestions. I'll try cutting back the pressure and slow down a bit and
see what happens ....

Check your volume too. Disconnect the air and just run the pot
preassure to test and you should get between 3 and 4 ounces per minute.
They use a cheep pyrex measuring cup at work (easy to clean) and time for 15
seconds. Most spray at 3 to 3.5 but a couple spray ar 4 ounces. That
should also help.
