Default brakes not working acting right on 1992 Jeep Wrangler 4.0

My brakes are not "acting" right. When i press on the brakes, they
engage just fine. My problem is when I take my foot off the brakes,
the pedal does not come all the way back up. Do I need to bleed the
brakes or do i have a more serious issue? Thanks in advance.

Do your brake lights stay on?

I have a 96 Jeep Cherokee Limited. Normally I just leave the lights on
"auto" and they go out after a minute or so. Fortunately I was still
outside when the lights went out, all except for the brake lights that is.
I checked the brake pedal and it was all the back. Not really wanting to
pull off a battery cable I went in the vehicle and pumped the brakes to see
what would happen. The lights went off. Hmmm..... So now I'm wondering what
actually causes this. Brake fluid reservoir looks full but the brake pedal
seemed a little spongy. Other than that the brakes work fine. Any
suggestions?

Doug did pass the time by typing:

Adjust the brake lamp switch.

The switch can be out of adjustment or stripped so it won't stay in
adjustment. It is a cheap plastic switch.

I have also heard of folks melting down the switch by using the wrong
wattage of brake lights. There are 'brighter' lights available that
aren't a good thing if the vehicle wasn't designed for them.

Same thing goes for reverse lights. Folks put the bright bulbs in
without adding a relay and they cook the $350.00 tranny switch....
