Anyone here like digging out the old 1st generation pentium box, blowing off
the dust and firin' her up for some old racing games? I decided to do that
last week and actually had some fun with Nascar2 (DOS), Nascar1, Need For
Speed SE, and the surprisingly fun Network Q RAC Rally Championship (1996)
by Virgin Interactive....all running on Windows 95 and Dos. Hmm maybe I have
just too dam much time on my hands lol..

I'm just about to EBay a system I put together just for old sims. PIII
600, VooDoo 5 video, Windows 98, Saitek X36 (?) HOTAS, Longbow and
Falcon 4.0 (1.08) loaded on it...

> You don't have to build a "retro" pc to play old games, just download two programs, one called dosbox and the other called D-Fend (both are freeware). Dosbox will emulate an older pc on any modern pc, but its a bit clunky, especially if you have forgotten all those old dos commands, so D-Fend is a windows friendly frontend program for Dosbox.

There's also the free Microsoft virtual PC that runs other operating systems
insice a virtual machine such as Windows 98 SE (you'll need a copy of
of Windows 98 to install it). The virtual PC has a virtual floppy and cd-rom
and images for these are avaliable like boot floppy image to install Windows 98.

The issue with virtual PC is there is no USB support, so USB based
controllers don't work. I don't know about DOSBOX. Also when I tried Need
For Speed Special Edition, the frame rates from the Windows 95 version were
less than 1 per second, and the DOS version didn't work at all).

Does DOSBOX allow the USB controllers to work?

Not really. Cars feel glued to the tracks compared to today's sims.

Net Q RAC rally (once the grip patch had been applied) was a great rally
sim.

Obviously GPL was great too. Wow, has it really been TEN years since it
was launched?

AFAIK dosbox will allow any attached controller to be used (via the DFend
frontend program which has many, many options which can be tweaked)
