Default ignition control modules

have an ignition system question for someone: my 82 spider wouldn't
start the other day, after i was out for a drive. I tested the spark
and had none, so to get it home, I replaced the coil, and she started
without a problem and I drove her without a hitch for a few days. then
she failed to start again. Again, no spark. As I'm reading in the
shop manual, they suggest changing the ignition control modules. What
do you think?

I did think about that initially, but the new coil revived her. But
now??? if the coil went out again, what could be causing them to burn
out? or could the control module be intermitently out? the new coil
resistance tests well (although i do realize the shortcomings of that
testing). am i looking completely in the wrong direction?

thanks for any thoughts,

iron

It could well be.

I would have thought that a failing control module could well cause
damage to the coils. Shame you didn't notice how hot the coil was when
you swapped it / it failed. Also, is it *just* coil you're replacing?
Some of them have integrated components in them as well....

Default ignition module

I did check the terminals and they were fine. the second time it
wouldn't start, the coil was quite hot, but it also was 100 degrees F (
about 38 C) that day, so I'm not sure if that tells me much. I'm going
to change the ignition control module and give it a try, since that's
only $15 or so and new coils are around $ 30 or so.

thanks everyone,

iron
