Default Alfa 156 V6 gearbox problem

Hi There!

Been scouring the web in the hope for a solution. I have just purchased
a 2001 2.5L V6 Q system (automatic) alfa 156. Am having an issue. The
car seems to stay in "safe mode" when driving - that is, only 1 gear in
auto and only 2 gears in 'manual' mode.

I've brought the car to a couple of places. One said they couldn't find
any faults logged on the system. the other said they found a code 0500
- to do with the vehicle speed sensor. unfortunately he isn't sure what
this sensor is (nor is our local dealer!). they think it may be to do
with the ABS system? Why this would affect the gearbox (or put the car
in safe mode is beyond me).

I'm at a loss as to what the problem is. Sometimes (though now less
often) it works ok and i am able to drive 'normally'. but most times it
doesn't.

The numerous threads i have read suggest cabling issues, or a sensor
issue. we have cleaned all the connectors, changed the ecu and the
fault remains.

Does anybody have any other ideas?

Thanks!
-F.
