Default GM automatic gearbox ratings - how meaningful?

Supposedly the last 2 digits are a load rating ... but what units?
But how come a 4L60E could withstand and LS1 engine, but the 6T65E was
fuggered by the smaller LS4 with several percent less maximum torque?
