Default What is viatology?

You may have heard the term 'viatology' discussed in these
newsgroups. But what does it mean?

In its simplest definition, viatology is the scentific study of
roads. Using objective forms of measurement to analyse motorways,
streets, roads, and more, one can make relational correlations to
traffic movement in several continents. Some examples of viatology
include, but are not limited to: road signage standards, the usage of
different pavements (asphalt, volcanic cinders, concrete),
international crossings, and the various types of intersections out
there.

It is paramount interest to distringuish viatology from subjective
studies of roads, ones which involve one's feelings for regionalism or
pride in one's own roads in their backyard. The intent of viatology
is to show relationships, similarities, and differences in one of the
world's oldest transportation media across the globe.

For more information on viatology, including its etymology thereof,
