Default chev 1500 transmission problem

I bought a 2002 silverado 1500 4X4 4.8L new and at
30 000km the transmission needed a rebuild something about the sun ring
planetary gear bla bla bla. It was under warrantee. Anyway I now have
98000km and it seems like the same thing has happened, this time there is no
warrantee. I put it in reverse and a snap and then a whining noise. It still
drives in the forward gears through. Is there a flaw with these
transmissions? Any idea what has broken this time, and what may have caused
it. Thanks

I suspect a sprag one way roller clutch has failed. They are not
really trouble prone on a stock tranny but they have been known to
fail when shift kit and big tires with tall gears are paired up and
the tranny is "worked" a lot.

It ends up it was the sun gear shell for the second time. The transmission
specialist at the dealer told me that GM knew of this problem and had a new
version of the sun gear shell which was case hardened but at the time they
wanted to use up old stock and put a mild steel on in my truck. This time
they put in a case hardened version. The bill came to just over $2000.00.
First and last GM product I will ever buy.

Used as they are designed, hyrdomatics are very reliable and amoung
the best out there. Anyones tranny can fail though if it is
overloaded. I have a 700R4 (predecessor to the 4L60 here) that is 16
years old and with 172k on it and it still works like new and it has
been to and through the rockies more than a dozen times fully loaded.
It does have a aux cooler and stock tires. A lso have a THM400 in a
truck that plowed snow for years and it is now 26 years old and it
still works great and has never been torn done either. It to has a aux
cooler and has had regular servicing of fluid and filter.
