Or just don't bother...

Where do these eco nutcases think the electricity comes from? It comes from
large stations that polute the environment in order to produce electricity.
That current and voltage has to be transformed before passing across the
country along power cables. This transformation is not 100% efficient, so
some power is lost. The electricity then has to be transformed again at a
local substation, which loses some power again. The power then has to be
transformed when it arrived at the home, which loses some power. The
electricity is then used to charge the car batteries. This charging process
is not 100% efficient and loses some power. The amount of smelly gas put out
of the rear of the car is zero, but the amount of polution produced by
electric cars has to be at least as high as a petrol or diesel car, if not
higher. The car batteries will only remain efficient for a couple of years
as they will hold less and less charge each time they are cycled. So after a
couple of years, there are a set of large car batteries that need to be
recycled in factories that polute the environment or disposed of in
landfill. New batteries need to be produced, in factories, that polute the
environment.

I am told that it takes more power and polution to build a new car than any
car can ever produce in its lifetime.

The hummer is the most eco-friendly car in the world - majority of its parts
are recyclable.

Blah blah blah.

<snip very fair points>

OTOH it is, I am given to understand, easier to make non-polluting[1]
power stations than to make millions of non-polluting cars, IYSWIM.

That I can believe.

*maybe*

[1] for certain values of non-polluting of course. 0[3] CO2 is quite
easy from atomic power, but some think the waste could be slightly more
worrying Then of course we have wind power, but no-one wants that in
the garden[2]

[2] Actually I think they look bloody marvellous things.
[3] You may need to discount any CO2 produced during construction.

Absolutely, so the act of *producing* all these non-poluting cars actually
does more harm to the environment that us al keeping the oil fueled cars
that we have already.

The best source of clean electricity currently is nuclear power stations.
They are very efficient, very powerful and very hated by most people who
promote and drive electric cars!

Wind, solar etc etc (green) power is either targetted to be or is already (I
forget) 10% of the UKs power source. This leaves 90% nuclear, coal, gas and
oil fired power stations. The eco people are dead against the clean, safe
(*1) nuclear power because Russia once had a bit of a slip up and created a
few purple farmers and 5 legged sheep (for about 10 years),

*1 - safe when handled correctly and we have so many health and safety
'officers' in this country that the worst accident we could expect in a
british power station would be if someone got changed too quickly and put a
toe through the end of his sock. This would of course, result in a 6 man,
5-day inquiry into the strength and reliability of cotton vs wool socks. It
would recommend maximum pulling forces when donning socks and would enforce
rigorous sock changing training and supervision. Anyone caught pulling on a
sock whilst leaning on a sink and standing on 1 leg would be hauled in front
of a tribunal and verbally cautioned under the 'safety in the workplace'
manual, section 328.1, sub paragraph 8. Hopping whilst changing socks is a
formal caution measure and a record will be place on personnel files for 5
years.

Did I go off on a tangent there?

What was I talking about? - Oh yes my new headlights - they are great. Get a
bit warm tho! Got worried the other day after I washed the car as there was
steam coming from them!

I love a good rant!

Quite possibly. We should probably keep them going until they fall
apart. cf my collection

Pah. Mine always steamed. Glad you like them. Have you stopped using
main beam yet?

Hell of a rant, but I felt better afterwards. Somedays you just have to
'vent'!

As you said a few weeks ago - there is little call for main beam these days.
My driving at the moment is boring old commuter traffic. Country roads in
places, but usually a stream of traffic. There is the odd mile or two where
I can overtake and make some headway and occasionally there is nothing in
front of me in either direction, so on my 2 hour journey home, I might have
1-2 minutes of main beam, but only some nights. The old halogen lights were
tired and dull and 5 minutes of dirty roads and they were covered in filth
and useless. At least the xenon can shine through the dirt and I can still
see the potholes!

I can produce an unlimited supply of methane. All I need is a good curry and
some guinness. Maybe I should patent this!!
