My question, as posted in uk.rec.driving

I bought a couple of LED superbright all singing all dancing LED bulbs.
In fact you can have 'em for nothing if you want 'em, that's all they're
worth.
On a dark night at home ( we have no street lights or anything ) I sat in
the car
and proudly turned on my new LED lights. I couldn't even tell if they were
on or not
without getting out of the car and going round the front to look. Sure, they
look bright enough
then but they throw no light of any value at all.

While I'm at it, I've made the same mistake by buying cheap halogen bulbs on
Fleabay.
Not only do they often upset the beam pattern but the "blue" ones I bought
were blue because
they had a layer of blue plastic round the bulb which promptly melted and
nearly set fire to the car.
Cheap white ones have lower light emission and don't last long either.

Halfraud's 90% brighter bulbs were not bad but at around £25 a pair, a tad
pricey. There's barely any difference
between those and ordinary 55w bulbs, I only buy Ring, Lucas or Osram now.

Better light means more wattage, I often used to put off-road 90 or 100w
bulbs in, the fuses need uprating and it's illegal.
The only car I had that couldn't cope with off-road bulbs was an off-road
car, my LR Discovery. The wires and connectors melted.
The light with 100w bulbs is considerably better though.
