Idle Control Valve

Does anybody know what controls the valve on an E38 please? I have
replaced it but still have the same intermittent failing to idle fault.

Have you checked the throttle position switch? Maybe you have a vacuum
leak too?

some people use a propane bottle *unlit* ...
just turn the knob and allow some gas to escape ...
slowly wave it around the intake system when the problem is manifesting ...
if it runs better when you bring it back to the same place it runs better,
then that is where your leak is as the propane temporarily fills the leak
with fuel fixing the engine performance problem momentarily giving you a
better idea what to fiddle with in sorting out what might be broken.

Likely either a CPS (Crankshaft Position Sensor) or leaky valve cover
gaskets. I had this issue diagnosed at a dealer but replacing the ICV did
not fix it. Go here and search for what is a relatively common issue:
