'01 Sentra: Roar in Frontend
I have a 2001 Nissan Sentra GXE with 110K miles on it. A little over a
month ago, I noticed a slight roar in the front-end, but it has progressively gotten worse. I just recently had my tires rotated and re-balanced. And, last weekend, I replaced both front wheel bearings, rotors and brake pads, but the noise is still there, and even more pronounced now on driver's side. The noise gets louder and after about 30-40 mph and stays at constant volume throughout cruising speeds. When I slow down I hear a very mechanical rhum-rhum-rhum, metal-on-metal type sound with a slight vibration as I come to a stop. This sound happens with or without the brakes being applied. I suspect a CV joint, but the boots look fine, not tears or leaks, and I have not heard the clicking or clunking sound that others suggest accompanies a worn joint. Does the problem I describe sound like a worn out CV joint? Bruce |

Could tire "cupping" cause this type of roar?

I recommend that, rather then telling the auto tech what the problem might be -- let the techs do their job! BBA |

It was the tire. It was worn, or scallopped along the inside tread.
