Default Alfa 166 - Drivers door lock has jammed locked

Guys,

A couple of weeks ago the central locking on the drivers door stopped
working so I had to lock/unlock the drivers door using the key in the
traditional manner.
Lets say on Tuesday night I locked the car up, manually, no problem but when
I came to unlock the door on Wednesday I discovered that the door would not
unlock!!!! How on earth am I going to fix this, I can't open the door to
change the door lock assembly!!

Any help, tips, hints, offers of wizardry, black magic or voodoo will all be
gratefully tried.

If I do get the door open and swap the lock, does that mean I will need a
different key for the drivers side? how is that managed?

Seriously any help appreciated.

Regards

Tall Dave

Have you tried opening from the inside?

Absolutely, it just wont give. I have tried pulling on the snib but it won't
budge, pulling on the inside lever, no good, jigging the lock with the key
but it just won't open.
I have taken the battery lead off and tried - nada!

I really don't know how I am gonna sort this....cheaply!

Been a while since I looked at a 166 but you will probably be able to
take the interior door handle out and then pop the lock that way. Maybe.
Or get an (auto) locksmith in. This sounds mechanical, not electrical.

Yellow pages will be your friend.

Definitely sounds mechanical. I think one of the levers in the
mechanism has seized, which led to the central locking failing.
Check the central locking fuse, then you need to remove the door panel
and see which part has given up the ghost.
Sometimes the door cards are hard to remove, with the door shut even
harder.
Does it make any difference if you open the window and try to release
the lock with the window open?
An auto-locksmith is probably well worth the investment.

Try locking and unlocking from the passenger door, remember that Alfas are
designed as Left Hand Drive. I have known this to reset the central locking
on other Alfa models.

I would suggest you replace the battery in your remote. I have had the same
problem and replacing the battery fixed it. Also disconnect your battery in
the boot for 30mins and then reconnect can also reset alot of problems. Make
sure you have your ICS code though.
