You know, of course, that he drives with his tailgate down because he
thinks it gets him better gas mileage.

Which makes him a *double* moron.

Do you think this deserves an 'unsecured load' citation?

If so, what percentage of cops would bother pulling this guy over BEFORE
a brick hits someone?

Yep, it is stupid but for some reason things will ride like that
forever. If anything they tend to work their way forward.
About the only way it is likely to fall off is if the PU is going up a
hill on a rough road.

Yep - the truck can't accelerate fast enough to shift them, but it can
brake fast enough

Is that a dent where it says Z71 or the fender bulge?

Also, any idea what those bumper stickers said?

This week I saw two vehicles lose stuff on the freeway.

First, on Tuesday, I was following a truck-trailer with 3 large open
dumpsters loaded with scrap metal. Some parts of the load was sticking
out almost one feet above the top making me doubtful it would fit under
the overpasses, so I was keeping a pretty big distance. All of a sudden
a piece of metal roofing flew off the truck, over the car behind it, and
landed on the ground right in front of me in the middle of the lane.
Fortunately, I managed to avoid most of it, and so did the car behind me.

Then, driving home Friday I saw a big mattress fly off a trailer drawn
by a taxi in an oncoming lane of the freeway. Don't know if there was an
accident or not, but I everyone behind it braked and a few cars swerved
to avoid it. It didn't look like the taxi stopped, but maybe he didn't
notice anything. I was definitely glad he wasn't going in my
direction... :-)

There was an incident near Pittsburgh where a guy could easily have been
killed by a tire that came off a camper that was being hauled on a tractor
trailer:

I saw the story on the news, and the tire they showed did not appear to be
mounted on a rim, but you can see the destruction it caused from the
pictures in the article. They said the tire weighed about 50 pounds, and it
did not look like a regular car tire. Makes me wonder how it was fastened.
Funny thing is, the guy slammed on his brakes before the impact. I wonder
if it would have missed him if he had hit the gas instead.

I saw the aftermath of a good one a couple weeks back - two eight foot long
4"x4" timbers fell off some vehicle on the Maine Turnpike in heavy traffic. At
least ten cars ran over them, causing everything from flat tires to shattered
alloy wheels and dented in steel wheels. Looked like at least one car
cracked it's oil pan. Several cars managed to hit them with all four wheels -
hope they had AAA! Very impressive to see the damage along a 1/4 mile stretch
of highway. No one hurt luckily, but of course no sign of the offending
vehicle either - probably didn't even know.

Our local radio shrink, Dr. Dan became a quadrupalegic when this happened
to him years ago. Dangerous stuff.
