Transmission Fluid Change??
What is the mileage interval for changing
Transmission Fluid Have a 2003 Mustang, manual shift and was advised by the dealer today when in for 28000 mile oil change that it should be changed. They wanted $160 to flush it and another $60 to refill it. Passed on it Gerry Ft Collins |

That's an exorbitant price, and too soon an interval. One sixty to flush the a stick tranny? What does that even mean, flush it? Do they just pour quarts of trans. oil through till they think it's 100% clean??? ;-) Not surprisingly, the dealer was just trying to make a buck... 60k is a more typical interval, maybe more if the TR-3650 uses "GM synchromesh" or another high-quality tranny oil, as Tremec (the transmission OEM) recommends. That oil can be $8 or more / qt., but it doesn't need 10 quarts by any means. Like another poster said, check the manual, or call another dealer's service dept. and ask them. I am not opposed to anal-retentive preventative maintenance by any means, but I am opposed to *unnecessary* PM. I'd call that guy's boss if I were you. Good luck -- Jason |

You'll find that it's well into the future. Gerry, I would highly recommend you have it changed; however, I wouldn't pay the dealer's price. Here's what I do. I pick up about 3 quarts of Redline's D4 ATF (it takes auto-trans fluid) and have a quick oil change place do the dirty work (suck out the old; refill with the new). It'll cost you a quarter of the dealer's price and you'll have a better lube. Note: I have my T-5's fluid changed out about every 25,000. Patrick '93 Cobra |

For an auto I always change the fluid and filter every 30k-35k miles. BTW, that is a mighty expensive fluid change for a manual tranny. Do they have to drop it from under the car first? |
