When shifting tranny makes noises ..or am I CRAZY??!

Hey all,
I've got a 1993 Honda Accord with manual transmission. I've
recently replaced the CV Axles, both front struts and Master Cylinder
(yay!). I've since noticed that my transmission is make some shifting
noises. When I'm shifting into a new gear it makes a clicking noise
(not a quiet noise either) and as well when I let the clutch back in
and it grabs there is a click.

I've neglected my car much in the past few years and postponed
many fixes for many years. I was extremely broke and now I'm not
extremely broke, so I started replacing bad things, like my CV axles
and then everything needed fixing. I am addicted to fixing things on
my car now, so I may just be hearing noises that have always been
there. I might just be listening more to my car. I might be thinking
too much about it. BUT, I have NEVER heard this noise in the past.

It's paid off, so I'm afraid to let it get hurt. It would suck
right now if I had to get some new car with more money to spend a
month....

I've changed out my tranny oil and still the same noise. am I
crazy?

Is it a "click" or a "thunk"? I am guessing engine mounts. Or you somehow
messed up the CV axle installation.

I agree. Logical first thing to look at.

Maybe OP needs to be sure his axles are in place as they should be.
My son did axle replacements on one of his Hondas and got a scary surprise..
The axle popped out on the LA freeway. The axle he got at the parts
house was not the right one, even though it was supposed to be. There
must have been more than one axle option that year. Happened a couple of
years
ago, so dont remember the exact details.

Anyway, OP would be strongly advised to find the source of the click.

Click or a thunk? That's a good question. It's a loud click and a soft
thunk. while trying driving "smoothly" through the gears the car kinda
has this hard shift to it and jumps just a bit. Though, the noise also
happens when I shift from neutral to a gear while just rolling and not
releasing the clutch. So, when shifting into third, for example,
there is a click when I shift, and a click when I release the clutch.


I too was thinking engine mounts -today actually. My girlfriend
drove us down to carrowinds and it was doing the same thing to her, so
it's not just me or my 'style of shifting'. I've shifted a few cars
(any car) while the engine is off and I could hear that mechanical
clicking of moving the parts, but this is quite more audible and while
the engine is accelerating.

When the clutch pedal comes down and there is, for lack of a better
descriptiion, positive torque coming out of the transmission (making
the car go forward instead of a down shift) the thunk is heard.
However, I can shift into a 'new' gear and it will make the same thunk.
not a loud thunk, more of a clunk (click-thunk). By 'new' gear I
mean, if I'm in second and goto neutral then go into third it will
thunk, but if I go back to neutral and into third again it won't.
Everytime I release the clutch pedal when accelerating ("positive
torque") and the pressure plate (flywheel?, clutch plate?, pressure
plate? ....I need to look this stuff up!!) grabs the transmission
there is that thunk.

This leads me to think transmission, because it does it when I shift
to a new gearl. I've changed the tranny oil even though the old stuff
looked fine. Is there anything that can go bad in there or get worn
too much that could acount for what I hear? The master and slave
cylinders were changed out two years ago, so I don't think they would
go bad, or be a culprit of what I hear. There is no slipping or
anything similar.

I've helped change CV axles on my car before, so I kinda know what
it feels like to get that pop when the axle end seats into the
transmission. I never had any probs from those old ones until I needed
to replace them many miles later. I put these new ones in back in
March and with over 1500 miles since then I have only recently heard
these noises. I don't think it's the CV axles

there maybe a coincidence thing going with the engine mounts. They
may be failing, but if so I believe it is slight. I'll check them by
observing the engine while someone starts to drive the the car, but I
doubt it is the problem.

Scube,
check the front tranny mount. It's mounted right where the eng.
meets the tranny on the lower side.

Check the "Sway Bar" links. Be sure the rubber isn't gone on them
where the "link bolts" are attached to the controll arms, and check
the bushings where the sway bar is mounted to the underbody.


Those are the 2 most common areas for the noise you're getting,
under the situation you're getting it.



As far as the tranny, 5th gear is the weak link on that unit.
Sounds like yours is working. But, quit shifting it without
pressing the clutch in, you'll be sorry!!!!!

Look at the torque mounts, not the main engine mounts. There is usually
two or move of these...

Kind of a long shot, but are you sure the axle nuts were torqued enough when
the CV axles were replaced? If they aren't torqued solidly the splines will
eat themselves up and cause a creaking that eventually changes to a click.
It doesn't take the full specified torque to prevent that - at least for a
while - but the nuts do have to be pretty darned tight.
