For using selective yellow HID bulbs in my headlamps. I actually got
these bulbs back in early January and have had no problems (till today).
I wasn't cited in either case (probably because they're not explicitly
illegal in VA).

I wonder if they thought I just had my parking lights on?

Anyway, here are some pictures. What do the rest of you think?

What exactly were you warned for? There are certain height and bright
requirements on lights.

The answer is it's St. Patty's day.

Both police officers stated that I needed white lights on the front of
the car. I didn't get a written warning and I don't believe that either
officer bothered to run my information through their computer. In fact,
the second officer didn't want to see my car's registration after I
asked if he wanted it.

Anyway, the pertinent laws in Virginia reads as follows:

§ 46.2-1011. Headlights on motor vehicles.

Every motor vehicle other than a motorcycle, road roller, road
machinery, or tractor used on a highway shall be equipped with at least
two headlights as approved by the Superintendent, at the front of and on
opposite sides of the motor vehicle.

The statute makes no mention of the color of the headlights. In fact,
the corresponding statute pertaining to tail lights reads as follows:

§ 46.2-1013. Tail lights.

Every motor vehicle and every trailer or semitrailer being drawn at the
end of one or more other vehicles shall carry at the rear two red lights
plainly visible in clear weather from a distance of 500 feet to the rear
of such vehicle. Such tail lights shall be constructed and so mounted in
their relation to the rear license plate as to illuminate the license
plate with a white light so that the same may be read from a distance of
50 feet to the rear of such vehicle. Alternatively, a separate white
light shall be so mounted as to illuminate the rear license plate from a
distance of 50 feet to the rear of such vehicle. Any such tail lights or
special white light shall be of a type approved by the Superintendent.

Note that this statute specifies that tail lights must be red in color.

Interestingly enough, there were two units behind me the second time I
pulled over. Perhaps they thought I was a possible DUI driving without
headlights on on a Friday night.

> There are certain height and bright requirements on lights.

As for the height, the selective yellow D2S HID bulbs are in the OEM
headlamp units. Their level of brightness exceeds halogen bulb
headlights, but they aren't quite as bright as regular HID lights. The
original bulbs were D2S HID bulbs (like most other cars with HID
headlights).

Makes sense then. Guess you need to drive with your headlamps on when
required.

I was driving with them on. It's kind of hard to drive at 10:30pm (more
than 4 hours after sunset) going 55 mph without them on an unlit highway.

Well, they're obviously E-codes which *are* illegal... but still, I run
'em, because I'd rather be illegal than unable to see.

I'm surprised you got pulled, honestly - I've been running the regular
white E-codes on the Porsche for over a year and a half and haven't been
pulled over yet.

I am guessing that the officer that pulled you over doesn't understand
the benefits of "selective yellow" and is thinking that it's just the
latest ricer fad to replace the blue tinted bulbs - in which case he's
wrong, but I can understand why he pulled you over. Personally I just
try to keep a super low profile and not get noticed, I wouldn't run
those bulbs except in my fog lights.

>Anyway, the pertinent laws in Virginia

That's all we need to know right there. Virginia.

Not only is there a law against damn near everything in Virginia, the Virginia
cops regularly make things up. I got nailed for "failure to control" after I
was practicing some sliding around with the Jeep - I had just gotten it about 4
months before, and the road was wet, and I was starting out from a sideroad
where there was no traffic for a (pretty long) block in each direction when the
rear end came loose on the wet pavement. I decided I'd figure out just what I
could do with respect to maintaining control, and accelerated to make the
wheels spin on the wet pavement and see how bad that made the rear come around.
No problem, it just fishtailed some and I was able to catch it quite nicely.
But the cop, who was a block away, comes up and gives me this bogus ticket for
"Failure to Control". Hell, I had control the whole time - I did just what I
meant to do. Maybe the cop would rather I learned about the handling
characteristics for the first time after some idiot comes left of center, I
have to swerve, and will be in a sliding situation for the 1st time with maybe
some pedestrians around, maybe some schoolkids or something. Yeah, that'd be a
great time and place to get brand new experience with the handling
characteristics of a new vehicle...

Then there's the ticket back in 2000 where I turned onto a country road and got
a 64 in a 45 ticket - hell, how was I supposed to know that it was a 45 mph
road - there were no signs, but it was. Secret, unusually-low speed limits are
fairly normal in Virginia. Oh, the damn thing was marked if you were coming
out of town on the road, but I was coming _into_ town. Just tough nuts for the
average citizen.

Then there's the cop that pulled up behind me just because I had overshot the
left turn I was trying to make. I explained it, and he just sat back there.
Then he asked what the hell I was doing, and I said as soon as he left I was
going to back up and make my turn. He actually yelled, and said, "That's
reckless driving" and I should go on and turn around and come back. Total
bull**** - no law against it, wasn't reckless driving - cops here just make
**** up.

Then there's the stuff you hear about - in the news a year or two ago, some
cops up near DC, Virginia cops again, go INTO A BAR with a breathalyzer, and
are going to arrest people for drunk driving IN THE BAR, when they're nowhere
near any cars they may have along. Cops in this state make **** up, every damn
day.

6 more years 'til I retire. That giant sucking sound you hear will be me
crossing the border for the very last time. The legal situation here (or lack
of it) is just one of the reasons that this is a really depressing place to
live.
