Something like that sounds more likely than that the break-in attempt would
to have anything to do with it. That might prevent you from rotating the
lock itself, but not the door from opening if it does.

Default Door locking mechanism

Thanks for all your suggestions so far. Interestingly enough, the door
opened ok this morning, so it appears it's got at least partially to do with
temperature, dampness or something. Now that I've got the door open I'm
going to take the panel off and have a look. I'll post something once I've
found out what the problem is.

Right, that sounds more likely. I'll take a look at that spring.

It sure sounds like something is badly worn. When cold it works, as it warms
up and expands it doesn't maybe?
