I've been removing the aerial on my 156 JTD for going through car washes,
but is it necessary to do this to avoid damage?

<disclaimer> I haven't tried in a 156 with a roof aerial, as ours both
had them in the rear screen.

However.... my Prius has a roof aerial and I've never removed it for a
car wash.

Well, ... removing the aerial will ensure that the aerial doesn't get
cleaned.

Meanwhile, the car wash will certainly ruin your paintwork, and on a bad day
it might take off your wing mirrors.

If it's a bee sting type, I'd expect it to get torn off by the dryer as
it goes forward along the car. ISTBC though.
