T4??? What T4 uses 2.0 aircooled heads?
Question should be: Are they 76-78 oval port heads? Or are they 79 ONLY square port heads? Or are they 80-83.5 Vanagon heads? A lot of people believe the 79 bus heads are the same as 80 up Vanagon heads, but NO, they are NOT. The Vanagon heads are part numbers 071-101-371A for the left and 071-101-371B for the right. They are square port with 37.5 intakes and 33 exhausts. The 79 ONLY heads look just like the Vanagon heads, with square exhaust ports, but the intake valves are bigger. And the part numbers are totally different: 029-101-371A for the left and 029-101-371B for the right. The intakes are 39mm and the exhausts are 33mm. SAME valve size as the 1700 heads. The list below is from http://www.tunacan.net/t4/reference/cylhead.htm I have emailed him repeatedly about the 79 ONLY heads but to no avail. 1700 021-101-371J 39.3 x 33 021-101-371Q 39.3 x 33 021-101-372 39.3 x 33 1.8/2.0 021-101-371H 41 x 34 or 39.3 x 34 1800 021-101-371S 41 x 34 or 39.3 x 34 1800 022-101-372G 37.5 x 33 2.0 039-101-371A 42 x 36 2.0 914 Porsche [If anyone wants pics of the 79 ONLY heads, I can send them] "Bart Bervoets" > wrote in message ... > wrote: > > no stripped holes. > > > > a few missing exhaust studs > > > > valves look good (STOCK I think) > > > > some dings on top, none near valves > > though. > > > > best offer > > > > pictures on request > > > > Are those T4 or T2? > Price? > > Bart Bervoets |

Karl, that is the first time someone has actually discribed the true
differences of 2.0 VW heads to me. Thank you, I own a Vanagon with the 2.0 heads, now I know what to buy in the future. -- Paul Broadway www.broadwaypub.com San Diego, Ca. So the difference between the AC Vanagon heads and the '79 only heads, to my
understanding is that the Vanaogn heads have smaller intake valves for better mixing of the fuel (injector heads) with higher velocity airflow partially to compensate for shorter intake runners (?) and to provide for better low end torque. All the FI heads had smaller intake valves than the carb counterparts. The other diff on the Vanagon heads is that if yer gonna use it on a '79 you need to drill and tap a sport for the head temp sensor to screw into on the forward end of the left head. At least that's my understanding of it all... Could be wrong but I don't think so. -BaH BTW, Karl, most references to "T4" around these parts are actually referring to the "T4" style engines as used in the later busses. It gets confusing whether somebody is referring to a T4 as a T4 or 914 or a T4 as a pancake engine in a bus - which even if one could read their mind it would still be confusing - can't read a blank page, y'know! Vanagon heads still have the same temp sensor forward of #3 intake port, same as 2.0 bus heads.
That is the difference between 029A and 029B for 79 and 071A and 071B for Vanagon. A is left for having the temp sensor hole. You use two A heads on an engine, just not 2 B's. Otherwise you would need to drill and tap the sensor hole in the tin screw hole. As far as I know, all the replacement aftermarket AMC Spanish heads are A or universal heads. They all come with the sensor hole.
