Wheel weight adhesive
My E39 Sport has the residue of the previous adhesive wheel weights stuck to
its rims. Some time in its past when new tires were mounted and balanced the old weights were removed but the glue stayed behind. What's a safe product to use to remove this stuff? TIA, Mel |

Do NOT under any circumstances use carb cleaner, however. It is tempting, but will soften your paint. It does, however, do a nice job of getting the stuff off along with old brake dust if you are stripping your wheels for a repaint (aircraft stripper doesn't work well on brake dust or wheel weight adhesive) nate -- replace "fly" with "com" to reply. http://home.comcast.net/~njnagel |

Start with something that you know won't harm the rim, gas or lighter fluid for example. Or maybe a bug and tar remover. Basically anything that doesn't contain a caustic chemical, like any of the acid/etching wheel cleaners which will eventually ruing the finish. But even these COULD be used so long as you carefully paid attention to the reaction, stopped when the residue is gone, and fully flushed/cleaned/removed any trace of the chemical once it had done it's job. |

Could try acetone, from your drug store -- essentially nail polish remover. It works on a lot of adhesives. -Russ. |

Many wheels have a similar clear coat on them as well. Be very careful if you try this method. Kyle. |
