Fantastic! Hey, what's your take on the paddle shifting auto? I know
everyone loves to rag on automatic owners but I like to know if the good
things I hear about it are true. What rpm are you running at a 70 mph
cruise? Inquiring minds want to know!

I am enjoying the paddle shift. It is a great tranny, and controls well
once you get used to it.
I was a die hard manual driver before this, but took it for a test
drive, and it was a much better choice than a second gen SE that was
there at the time. ( Don't remember if that was a '03 or '04).

You really have to test drive one to see if it works for you.

I would have to go back and watch the tach at 70 again to give you a
good answer. I think it is around 3200, but don't hold me to that.

The only thing I don't like about the car is no LSD rear for the auto.
There are times I really miss that, even though the LSD in the '93 was
only the viscous LSD, but it has held up well. Don't have full snows
for the '06 - was looking for some decent 16" rims to put them on - so
running decent all seasons tires. It gets hairy with a little slippery
stuff out there. The rear will kick out very easily if you hit a patch
with unbalanced grip in the rear. So that is a consideration if you are
in snowy land, and use it year round.

I bought a white 1993 B model with 50,000 miles on it in May 2000. I
drove it another 90,000 miles over the next six years until it got
rear-ended and totalled in May 2006. When I bought it I decided to keep
a log of how much gas it used so I recorded every fill-up; it averaged
28.3 MPG.

Even though it was all beat up and I was looking at expensive repairs in
the near-future I was really unhappy to lose it and not particularly
willing to drive a "normal" car where my line of sight was so far above
the pavement.

Plus the rental car had an automatic. It's pretty hard to find any new
car besides a Miata that doesn't come with a mandatory automatic. I
suppose it's just what you're used to, but I actually find it more work
to drive an automatic in traffic than a manual. With a manual it is
easy to keep your position in traffic without a lot of braking and
accelerating by modulating the pressure on the gas pedal.

So I went out and bought another white Miata, a '99 "base" model (i.e.
crank windows, no cruise control, but it does have air conditioning) the
next week. Since then I have put 95,000 miles on it. This time I also
wrote down all my car payments, insurance fees, repairs and maintenance
costs, etc. in the log book and I come up with 27.9 MPG and 32 cents per
mile.

32 cents per mile is really cheap plus I get to ride around in a sports
car!

Just one. When I find something I like I tend to hang on to it.

SWMBO has been with me 52 years, a lot longer than the Miata. However, I
also have a 1952 Jaguar which kind of evens the score.

Only two - both Classic Red - the 1990 had around 113,000 on her
when she was killed, the '04 has just under 31k now.

I sure do miss the '90. ;-(
