What a stupid truck driver
Saw it all today. On a 4 lane divided road (2 lanes each way), lots of
commercial businesses/restaurants on this stretch. Limit is 40. I'm in the right lane, and about 500 feet ahead I see an 18 wheeler STOPPED in the right lane. I merge left. As we approach the truck, the guy in front of me slams on the brakes, I slam on mine, guy behind me slams on mine. We come do a dead stop. The trucker driver cuts it hard to the right, and starts to back up. Luckily the guy behind me saw what was going on, and we all start backing up, as the trucker doesn't see the guy in front of me. He's laying on the horn, trucker keeps coming. We must have backed up about 25', and FINALLY the trucker once he's perpendicular to the road looks to his left and sees the pile of cars, once of which he's nearly running over. The trucker had the nerve to roll down his window to yell at the guy in front of me, which is absolutely ridiculous, and I roll down mine to yell at the trucker, telling him he started backing up before any clearance, without backup lights, without any kind of right of way, and without looking to see where the hell he was going. |

You didn't explain it but i gather the trucker was trying to back into a driveway. They do crap like this all the time cause they know in the event of a crash, they won't get hurt. That's why penalties for reckless driving should be much greater for a guy driving an 80,000 pound truck than a 3000 pound car. |

What should the penalty be for trying to turn your car into a submarine and drowning someone in the process?? |

If I see something that stupid, and the truck is marked with his employers company details, I'll note them and the truck registration and phone the company to report an instance of bad driving. They don't actually like their vehicles being involved in accidents. Some UK companies have even signed up to an informal 'is my driving ok ?' scheme for their vans and trucks with a freephone number. Graham |

There is a similar thing here. Many comercial vehicles - including cars - have a sticker on the back that says "How's my driving?" or similar and a vehicle number and a 1-800 number to call. -- Paul Self-appointed unofficial overseer of kooks and trolls in rec.autos.driving. |

Ah, so that explains this: "Do we operate under a system of equal justice under law? Or is there one system for the average citizen and another for the high and mighty?" ~ Senator Ted Kennedy, 1973 Thanks again for the clarification! > -- > Paul > > Self-appointed unofficial overseer of kooks > and trolls in rec.autos.driving. |

My favorites are the ones that say "Don't like my driving? Call 1-800-EAT-****" Funny anecdote: back in the days when you could request a specific telephone number from Illinois Bell when you signed up for service, I had the brainstorm to ask for 328-7448. I thought it was hilarious when people would ask me for my phone number and I could respond by saying "EAT-****!" I had my come-uppance, however, as I got an endless series of prank phone calls (in the days before Caller*ID) from little kids who had seen the bumper sticker and thought it would be funny to dial the number. >Paul > >Self-appointed unofficial overseer of kooks >and trolls in rec.autos.driving. I remember those, in the days before the police started=20 cracking down on them. One of my favorites was the "new kids suck,"=20 bumper stickers from the late '80's and the early '90's. Again, this was=20 before the hyper sensitivity we see today put an end to such things (at=20 least around here where I am).=20 > Funny anecdote: back in the days when you could request a specific > telephone number from Illinois Bell when you signed up for service, I > had the brainstorm to ask for 328-7448. Don't really know. I think it started when I got back in to the bartlo=20 pest war a few months ago, and someone calls themself the Official=20 Overeseer of kooks and trolls in another group, so I decided to=20 become the unofficial version of the same here.
