Default is 10W40 out of fashion ???

for a 1998 328i ??

have seen some posts ect that some car
manufacturers dont want it in the engine .

i'm thinking of using Gastrol GTX .

*C*astrol still do 10W40 in the UK, along with several other makes. A
very common weight oil, in fact.

Unless they've changed the description, it is said to be suitable for
'older' engine designs. Ie, probably not multi-valve types.

BMW UK now recommend and use their latest synthetic in the M52 engine.

Generally, yes. 10W40 is looked down upon because of the larger amount of
modifiers that are required in the base oil to get such a wide viscosity
range. It tends to suffer from more viscosity breakdown than narrower
ranges (such as 10w40 or 25W40). This only applies to non-synthetic type
petro based oil.

Fully synthetic oils such as Castrol Syntec or Mobil 1 or even BMW's own
full synthetic oils tend to maintain their viscosity even though they may be
a very wide viscosity range (5W30, 15W50, etc.)
