is 10W40 out of fashion ???
for a 1998 328i ??
have seen some posts ect that some car manufacturers dont want it in the engine . i'm thinking of using Gastrol GTX . |

Unless they've changed the description, it is said to be suitable for 'older' engine designs. Ie, probably not multi-valve types. Generally, yes. 10W40 is looked down upon because of the larger amount of modifiers that are required in the base oil to get such a wide viscosity range. It tends to suffer from more viscosity breakdown than narrower ranges (such as 10w40 or 25W40). This only applies to non-synthetic type petro based oil. Fully synthetic oils such as Castrol Syntec or Mobil 1 or even BMW's own full synthetic oils tend to maintain their viscosity even though they may be a very wide viscosity range (5W30, 15W50, etc.) -Fred W |
