Default The DIC Challenge!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, I'm not buying the 30 mpg out of a 427 cu in Vette. Everyone that is
claiming the huge mileage is trusting the DIC to calculate it. So we are
trusting a flow sensor essentially. Or maybe Big Brother at GM wants us to
feel good by "massaging" the numbers a little in the software calculation.

So here's the challenge:

Fill up your Vette with fuel.

Reset the Avg. Gas Mileage in the DIC.

Reset the Trip Odometer in the DIC.

Drive a full tank of gas. Around town, on a trip, or combined. On the
interstate at a constant 75 mph if you want the max.

Fill up the tank again. Get a receipt with the gallons put in. Write down
the mileage in the Trip Odometer. Write down the Avg. Mileage in the DIC.

Here's how we used to calculate these things: Get a calculator and divide
the Miles by the gallons used. That's how they got the term, Miles per
Gallon! Go figure

Compare that numbers from the calculated (true) mileage to the DIC mileage.

Report back to the group your findings. If you get 30 mpg (true), we'll
all be in admiration of your machine. And we will all want to know your
modifications. You may stand up on the door of your Vette with the window
down and do a back flip and put it up on YouTube if you want.

There is to be a strict separation of Vettes and religion. No name
calling. This will be an honor system between Ladies and Gentlemen.

I will be taking the challenge too. So far the best I've done in my 2008
Z06 is 13.8 mpg, as calculated by the DIC. However, the car only has 2000
miles on it and I haven't been able to stay under 200 horsepower output and
4000 rpm so far. 6th gear!? 5th and 6th gear are for weenies!

Good luck,

Ed

Hey weenie (is that a name?), tell me what it feels like to hit the
rev limiter in 5th gear. ;-) I see you're already making an excuse
about the low mileage, believe me it don't get better with age.

You're on, I'm going to drive down to South Carolina and take my
granddaughter to school on her birthday about 600 miles each way, will
report DIC and calculate MPG next week.

Going back 35 years or so, the 71 454 365hp 4 speed Vette with the 3.08 rear
I had then would get around 16 mpg at 75-80 on the road.

It's the only way I/we have ever computed mpg. And yes, we've gotten 30
mpg on trips, most recently on one to RI. No mods, went hammer and tongs
up the highway with one bathroom stop [ we had two dogs with us in the
hatch/cargo area ] started at 11pm and drove till dawn.

Hey, that's fight'n talk Buster!!! I ain't hit the rev limiter in 4th
yet! This car scares the Bejuses out of me! (Omg, is that a religous
remark?) I did 140 in the C5. But I ain't a hero. Ii've done 130 in the
C6.

Good luck in your drive with your granddaughter. I'm sure you'll pull up in
front of the soror/dorm and be the coolest granddad there!
My granddaughter was only 4 and could spell VORVETTE.

Later, Ed

Not a Z06 but I just posted my findings elsewhere on exactly this
challenge. For the first 16,000 miles, the average DIC reading is 1.2%
LESS than the actual mileage. Highest DIC mileage with an average
speed of 73mpg was 29.8 mpg. for a distance of 451 miles. Add in the
long term 1.2% error which should be more accurate than a single pump
measurement and that's 30.16 mpg. 2007 LS2 engine no modifications
(yet)

I've only hit it once in third because my brother was dissing me that
it felt mushy. At about 140 that sucker really plants its self on the
road although I think he was white long before that.

Nah, she lives down there and just turned 16, I've make that drive 2/4
times a year since 1988. Two of her 3 sisters have birthdays in Sep.
so we call it our party month.

Yeah, my little DIC lies.

My 2003 Coupe consistently delivers 0.5 to 1 mpg LESS than the DIC
average. My typical commuting (about 30 miles each way, mostly
highway, sometimes heavy traffic) mpg is in the 25.5 to 27.5 range
when calculated the old way (miles/gallons). That easily drops into
the teens when I'm having fun.
