Ophadell Williams was at the wheel of the World Wide Tours bus when he apparently lost control and crashed on the New England Thruway early yesterday. The bus slammed into a guard rail, overturned and hit a sign post, slicing the roof off nearly end-to-end at window level. Fourteen of the 32 people on board were killed. Eight remain in serious condition at St. Barnabas and Jacobi hospitals in the Bronx. Injuries include severe head trauma and lost limbs. The driver remains in the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver told police he was trying to avoid a swerving tractor- trailer. But although State Police seized a tractor-trailer that could have been involved, sources tell the Daily News at least one passenger saw Williams nodding off before the crash. Passengers reportedly told investigators the bus hit the rumble strips three times. "We have a number of reports, some of who are saying the driver was operating southbound at a high rate of speed,” said Major Michael Kopy of the NY State Police during a news conference last night. The Daily News says the driver pleaded guilty in 2003 to driving without a license. Officials say they're still waiting for the results of toxicology tests. snip |

Drivers who operate locally only, rarely, if ever, even get questioned by a cop or even a DOT officer. Simply for the fact there is not enough manpower to do so. Tour bus operators who venture out across the country don't even cross scales. Because they select routes that avoid these scales. As an experienced truck driver, I never even saw a "Greyhound" bus cross a scale. Let alone be stopped by an officer for any reason. In this particular case, I'd have to ask, why was the driver in a condition of "nodding off"? How long had the bus been at the casino? 10 hours? I'd like to see more stringent and enforced rules for tour bus operators. They should not be getting a "free ride" just because no one ever checks them. |

Near here, a bus went of the road and got airborne before it crashed.
It turns out the bus went to a gambling casino overnight and the driver spent all night gambling and never slept. I'm talking of USA bus drivers, dip****. The one article where the cops pinged a guy's cell phone and found him on a bus, is not a routine "stop" as I was talking about. The one photo of the "Fungwah" bus with the cop behind it doesn't tell me the cop pulled the bus over. I have driven nearly a million miles in 48 states and I still as yet have to see one commercial bus inside a working scales, or being pulled over by the DOT or any other officer, for any reason. I was on a bus ride out to Colorado one year. The bus used US 6 even though there was a perfectly good interstate just a few miles to our south, one you could see from the bus. Most likely to avoid the scale on the interstate. |
