"Fake Speed Bumps Create Optical Illusion, Driver Confusion"

PHILADELPHIA — Cathy Campbell did a double-take and tapped the
brakes when she spotted what appeared to be a pointy-edged box lying
in the road just ahead.

She got fooled.

It was a fake speed bump, a flat piece of blue, white and orange
plastic that is designed to look like a 3-D pyramid from afar when
applied to the pavement.

The optical illusion is one of the latest innovations being tested
around the country to discourage speeding.
------------------------------------------

So how to they make it where only the speeders brake for nothing?

By making them visible to drivers for what they are at lower velocity.

"Even after motorists adjust, the fake bumps will act like flashing
lights in a school zone, reminding drivers they are in an area where
they should not be speeding, he said."

Many if not most people don't understand, or disagree with, the
rationale that in some areas velocity should be insufficient to carry
them over the curb, across the sidewalk and into and through a window
should a loss of control occur.

Municipalities seem reluctant to writing tickets in a lane that is
used for parking between the hours of 9-5, but is open to traffic 6-9a
and 5-6p.

****s up "throughput".

So, instead, we're all going to end up with speed cameras, and drivers
who speed excessively where it is least safe will never recognize that
they were instituted as, if not a measure of last resort, certainly
not the first.

Ever hear of second-hand smoke, sparky??? It's a slow killer for kids
and others around the stinkpot in question.
A smoking mother can also put her unborn fetus at risk by damaging its
brain cells, lowering its birthweight, curbing their IQ, shortening
their final height as an adult, stunt their social/cogntive skills and
really give them the short shrift in life in competition with all the
other suits and attache cases on the commuter railroad of life.

Just wait until the first idiot swerves to avoid it, and runs right over a
nearby child. Think it won't happen? I'm already taking bets on WHEN.
It's not a matter of if. -Dave

Well, it would take a wall to get some idiots to slow...

I'd probably try it at full speed anyway - most of the speed bumps and
humps around here actually bump you less at high speeds than at low.

I'm glad most of the assholes who design and install speed bumps don't
know what they're doing, and I hope it stays that way.

That's silly. If you can recognize it at 100 feet going 25, you can
recognize it at 100 feet going 35.
