Speaking as a chemist, who's dad worked in the petroleum industry,
California gas is blended or cracked differently that other states. It
burns cleaner but contains less "energy" per unit volume
I've had 20% better mileage with Nevada's gas than our own.
Perhaps it's a conspiracy just so Sacramento collects more sales
tax?....K

The clean part is nice. The performance hit
finally went away (see Hib Halverson's fuel
discussion on the Idaho Corvette website <
http://www.idavette.net/hib/fuel/index.htm >
Problem was that it reduced California's yield
per barrel of crude.

Two or three years ago, Pres. Bush waived the
EPA requirement for Calif. blends. The yield
went back up but the air got dirtier. Showed up
particularly on trips from SoCal to Vegas -- air
out in the desert turned 'dirty-tan' when we
returned to 49-state gas.
