Default auto stick problems

My mom owns a 1974 Karmann Ghia which is the so called autostick and
when i go from 2-3 or 3-2 gear it wont go into gear the first time and
also it will not start when it is not in park when i say not start
meaning turn over at all it gets power to everything lights and what
not but no turning over from the engine if anyone can give me some
advice i would really appreciate it. Im just trying to make it a fun
car for my mom once again it was her first high school car and it
means a lot to her and im on a kinda low buget th nak a lot!!

Not to be mean or critical, but try using punctuation. People tend to
respond with more frequency when they can read what you have to say
without going crazy.

Check your transaxle fluid. I'm not too up on autosticks, but there are
a couple of good websites out there.

Search the old messages -- that is where I had seen the link.

There is a safety switch built into the tranny which prevents the
starter motor from running when in gear.

Not being able to shift into gear is most often caused by a simple
electrical contact built into the shift lever.
Have someone stand by the engine while idling.
As you try to engage a gear, see if they hear the vacuum control valve
"click" and maybe hear a slight "whoosh". If they DO, the
contact in the shift IS working.

This simple test will get you off in the right direction.

I STRONGLY suggest plunking down for a copy of the Bentley Official
Manual for ’70 thru ’79 Type 1 cars (includes Ghia).
Besides all the usual engine/suspension stuff, it has a very excellent
section on the AutoStick.
