I've got firestones on mine - slower speed rating (130mph I think), but I
don't tend to go into 3 figures much anyway! Long lasting tyres. Quiet.
Probably not as grippy as the faster wearing shoes, but they do the job.
About £55 each at my local.

What is it with MAF's ? Are we to assume that they need regular
replacement ?

Dave S.. (currently minus 156, possibly needing MAF)

Regular - as in every few years. Think of it like an exposed light
bulb filament that's cooled by the passing air after the air filter.
The electrical current passing through the wire is proportional to the
temperature of the wire. Thus the ECU can easily measure the air mass
passing into the engine.

Unfortunately, the air isn't perfectly clean and deposits build up
over time on the hot wire insulating it from the airflow. This means
that the ECU thinks less air is entering the engine than there is so
you eventually get a lean mixture and resultant misfire.

It is possible to clean the wire but I expect it to be rather
delicate. Perhaps the deposits will be of a hardened varnish-like
type. I've more heard of people buying their MAF a little extra time
than being completely successful at their cleaning. A recon unit will
have been properly cleaned and the wire replaced (perhaps) so it
should be as good as new.

Asked to guess, I'd say a MAF will last less long in London than in
the Highlands of Scotland.

Pretty much, they get messy. Many cars have similar issues.

It's just a wonderful experience. Soon to be consigned to history, I am
pleased to say.
