So did you ever get a mechanic to look at the car and see if the
cruise cable was completely removed?

Not yet. Cataract and serious dental work has priority right now.

Did I mention here that when it started to accelerate while my foot was
on the brake I shifted into neutral and tapped the gas pedal? Worked
like a charm. That makes the problem much less serious.
