California court: Drivers can read cellphone maps

Drivers in California can legally read a map on their hand-held cellphones while
behind the wheel, a state appeals court ruled Thursday.

The moronic Joe Simitian is at this very moment introducing a new bill (supported
by the automakers) to make it illegal to use ANY hand-held GPS in the California
cars! http://www.senatorsimitian.com/entry...ct_information

Joe Simitian deserves an award for his concern for public safety.

I don't care if Satan supports it. You are unlikely to convince me that
it is safe to drive while attempting to read a complex map display.
That's why we have voice-enabled GPS in our cars. If the portable GPS
can give voice instructions without being seen or touched by the
driver, that's OK. Otherwise, ban 'em.

I'm mixed. While I agree in principle, I've also watched what happens
what a GPS voice instruction isn't clear, or isn't far enough in advance
for the driver to understand what is coming up and get into the right
lane, leading to stupidity and panic swerving to correct into the right
lane. The concept of "it's not a big deal if you miss a turn, the GPS
will find another route" is beyond the capabilities of most drivers.

So whether it's better to have a distracted but better informed driver
or the opposite is a matter I'd like to see researched.

They said the same thing about Senator Joe McCarthy.
Until people came to their senses.

He does. His name is Senator Joe Mcc... I mean Simitian.

You're joking right? At this very moment, Simitian's office is preparing a
bill to outlaw anything in a driver's hands other than the steering wheel.
That means no cigarettes, no coffee, no portable GPS, not even a pair of
sunglasses. (http://www.senatorsimitian.com)

You think that's sane?
It even includes paper maps, I might add.

Nothing in California is sane.

But what I want to know is whether an ipad with cellular is considered a
cell phone?

such drivers will do stupid things no matter what.

cite them for unsafe lane changes, unsafe turns, etc.

there's no need to ban gps for the rest of the world who drive safely
and responsibly.

banning a gps won't make a distracted driver any less distracted.

they'll find something else to distract them.

what's to read? maps are visual. you look at it, see arrows where to
turn and then turn.

plus, looking at a gps is safer than using paper maps.

there are plenty of other potential distractions, including radios,
cd/tape players, cup holders and more. even adjusting the heat or a/c
takes your eyes off the road.

you don't see anyone bitching about any of that because nobody wants to
give up any of that. imagine a car without a radio.

plenty of people can use a gps responsibly without endangering others.

if someone is driving unsafely, cite them for *that*.

and if you want to ban something, ban the idiot drivers who lack good
judgement which will have the secondary benefit of drastically reducing
traffic for everyone else.
