could this be the real reason for tax by the mile?
If the existing taxes on automobile travel are done away with and replaced by a per-mile tax that is determined using a transponder in a tracking system of some sort those in the political class or sufficently connected to it will be able to escape taxation. The current system of road taxation is difficult for the political class to escape. For decades their ability to drive for free was limited and could be rather obvious with limos and the like. Skipping tolls could mean an embrassing paperwork trail coming to light even if the tickets were 'fixed'. The implementation of transponder tolling has resulted in a much cleaner way to escape paying tolls. Just have a 'free pass' transponder. This sort of activity has been discovered in a number of states. Today's is Maryland. ( http://www.thenewspaper.com/news/29/2952.asp ) My guess is that the next step will be for the connected not to get 'free pass' transponders but to have the same we all do, but with one difference. automagically there will be lots and lots of credits in the accounts. One way or another they'll drive for free under a transponder system they control. |

Florida's outrageous taxes are largely for the benefit of business men to expand their business and infrastructures to support their business, such as traffic lights, new roads to developments etc. Their idea of prosperity is more people in a smaller area for more profits. It results in hugher taxes and poorer quality of life for everyone else. The Businessman takes his riches and flees to their enclaves in corners of the world where quality of life still exists. |

Hell, in illinois now with "open tolls", just drive through. Once the system finds the plate to belong to a "free ride" vehicle, it just moves on to the next sucker. While I was truck driving, I found out they didn't check trucks. I drove through town rather than around. Not once was I ever questioned about it. |

Which is exactly why the big push for heavily subsidized transit systems. It allows new DENSE development along the lines, increases the value of the property owned by the insiders who buy up such property, and most of the funding comes from OTHER locations that don't have the transit. |
