Main Engine Seal Leak
Is there a quick or easy way to check the main engine seal for leaks without
removing engine? I have a leak that seems to originate from that area. tia, -- Mel P. parts for sale http://melsvws.4t.com/vwparts/index.htm 77 Bug - stock FI http://melsvws.4t.com/77bug/index.htm 70 KG Cabrio http://melsvws.4t.com/70ghia/index.htm |

If you can tell what type of oil it is (gear oil or engine oil) then you'll know. You can also monitor your oil levels to see what is leaking but that takes time. I recomend that you thoroughly clean the engine so you can better see where the leak is coming from. If it is the engine/trans union, it's either a transmission input or a front main engine seal, get one of each before you pull the engine, they're pretty cheap. |

Main Engine Seal Leak
Hello Mel!
You have to pull the engine to replace the main seal. The main seal gets hard over time and begins to leak. A hard main seal can damage the flywheel. A new main seal will not last too long with a damaged flywheel. This is a good time to replace the tranny input shaft seal. It is not that hard to do. Another leaky source might be the oil cooler seals. You might get by with just tightening it up a little. You will need a 13 mm 45 degree offset wrench to reach the bottom two nuts unless you want to go the long route of removing the inlet manifold, pulley tin, and left upper tinware. This works for me! |
