You don't have a clue whether the resulting boredom would cause more inattention than either cell phones or radios, and thus cause more accidents, or not. Its well known that playing the radio helps keep some drivers awake, and without a stimulus of some kind (speed limits are way too low to cause most people to have to do enough to keep them focused on the driving task) lotsa people go to sleep... even in the daytime... |

It's not really a matter of what you're hands are fiddling with ... it's where your MIND is. Car radios are mostly passive devices - you set 'em to a station and just LISTEN. That sort of multi-tasking is easy, even men can do it :-) But a cell phone ... that's NOT passive. You have to get INVOLVED in a conversation with somebody who isn't even there. You kinda have to move halfway into their world. Women get sucked-in even more than men. Meanwhile, the schoolbus has stopped short in front of you .... |

The >driver should be focused on driving. Careful though ... over-focus leads to 'highway hypnosis' and/or falling asleep at the wheel. 99.5% of driving is just BORING AS HELL - so the mind wanders as far as it needs to. Alas, exactly when that critical 0.5% may arrive, it's just not predictable. A problem. Which, to an increasing degree, will be solved with automated systems. There are already cars on the market which will automatically brake when an obstacle appears and the DARPA contests are yeilding auto-navigation systems soon to be superior to human drivers for ordinary highway driving. So, "The Car of the Future" ... it may not even have a steering wheel. Jabber on your implanted cell phone as much as you want. Remember the transucent white egg- shaped pod cars from "Sleeper" ? That's the 2025 Toyota :-) |
