Donate Your Used Car To Charity, Get Tax Deduction

I donated a good car (perfect running, good looks, everything worked, lower-than-average mileage) worth some $ thousands and got my $500 deduction. The charity turned the car over to an auction company that transported it and sold it for maybe $1-2k. Take away their commission and the charity didn't get much. Next time: Say I have a car worth $7000 in a private sale. I'll sell it for $6000 to save time and effort and give the $6k to the charity. Everybody wins, including the buyer.
